A typical domestic solar thermal system consists of 2 flat plate collectors similar to the one in the above image. Producing approx. 2078 kW of heat per annum. The Renewable Heat Incentive is currently 8.5p per kw/h
2078kWh X 8.5p per kw/h
=
£176.63 per year
+ a further 25% saving on the average heating bill
The Renewable Heat Incentive
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government-backed incentive to make it worth your while to produce renewable heat. Very similar to the 'Feed-In-Tariff' for PV, you earn a fixed income for every kilowatt hour of heat you produce. This is likely to be used in your own property, but if you are lucky enough to be connected to a heat network you could get an additional payment for 'exporting' surplus heat. This is a guaranteed fixed payment for a period of 20 years. Add this to the reduction in your standard heating bill and solar thermal offers an impressive 12% return on investment.
